The silence of space is a symphony of dread. Earth, a distant, fragile blue marble, shrinks in the visor of Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), a medical engineer on her first mission. Beside her floats veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), charismatic and experienced, attempting to lighten the tension with stories as they repair a satellite. Shariff (Phaldut Sharma), a voice crackling through their comms from mission control, guides them, a lifeline tethering them to reality. Suddenly, debris, a catastrophic cascade of destruction, rips through their world. The shuttle Explorer is torn apart, and Stone and Kowalsky are flung into the infinite abyss, their tethers severed.
